According to designboom | architecture & design magazine, newson designed the Embryo chair in 1988, manufactured by Cappellini.5 In 1995, Oliver Peyton commissioned Newson to design the interiors of London's Coast restaurant, working with Robert Grace Architecture.6 Wallpaper described the interior as having white walls and floors and curved lines; the restaurant closed in 2000.6

According to Wallpaper*, several objects and furniture pieces Newson designed for Coast were later put into production.6 Newson also designed the Marmo Bar at Madrid's Hotel Silken Puerta América, which features approximately 400 aluminium beams nearly seven metres tall.7

Products and design approach

According to CNET, newson founded the watch company Ikepod in 1994.8 The Montblanc M collection, developed by Newson, launched in September 2015 and was offered as fountain, rollerball, ballpoint, touch-screen, and drawing instruments.2 Launch-year nibs carried the initials 'MN' as an homage to Newson, using a gold nib with a two-tone rhodium and ruthenium finish.2

Newson said he sought to balance functional simplicity with a sensory experience in using the Montblanc M.2 For Knoll, Newson designed the Newson Task Chair, whose support is intended to be visually unrecognizable.3 Newson said he develops and engineers designs on computers, but ideas are not born there.5

Apple and charitable work

Apple confirmed that Newson joined its design team led by Jonathan Ive; Vanity Fair reported that the two had been close friends for years.4 Ive and Newson said they were excited to formalize a collaboration they had found effective.4 News coverage linked Newson's hiring to Apple's expected watch launch, but that link was reporters' framing, not confirmed causation.1,8 Newson and Ive curated a benefit auction for (Red); CNET reported that it raised $26.2 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.8

Auction sales

A Pod of Drawers designed by Newson in 1987 sold at a Paris auction for €1.019 million, more than twice its estimate.1 Artcurial said all lots in its Heavy Metal sale sold, totalling €2.7 million.1 CNET reported that a Newson work sold for $1.6 million in 2006, which it described as a record at the time for a living contemporary designer.8
